An Overview
The Madras University Library system consists of four campus libraries, viz., Madras University Library, Guindy Campus Library, Taramani Campus Library and Marina Campus Library. The Main library spreads over 70,000 Sq.ft. with five stack rooms, Main reading hall, Periodical reading Hall, Circulation desk, e-resource centre, Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), Pamphlet Collection Unit, Fine Arts collection unit, Ready Reference Section, Resources Cell for Competitive Examinations, Data processing Unit, Theses, Digital Library Unit, Reprographic Unit, Acquisition Section, Technical Processing Section and Media Resource Unit. All the library functions have been well automated and book transaction is made using ID card. Video Cameras have been fixed at tangible points for surveillance. It has excellent collections and conducive reading environment.
This Library is also able to provide access to more than 120 University Library catalogues of the country through Union Catalogue of Infonet consortia. The facilities such as Virtual library, e- Shodhsindhu and services like UGC Infonet - Inter Library Loan services of the library are not only used by the academics and researchers of the University and also academics of the affiliated colleges and sister Universities of the country and from other countries as well. Madras University Library manages knowledge both in print and digital formats and provide access to scholarly resources. And it provides faculty, students, and staff with professional support to find, evaluate, manage, and use such resources. It also provides high-quality ambiance for both reflective and collaborative work and study. Its collection of about 5.50 lakh is used by more than 3000 members and others from various states of India as well as from abroad.
