Madras School of Economics
Gandhi Mandapam Road | Esst. on:1993
In recent years there has been increasing concern about the deterioration in the standards of higher education in economics, environment and finance in the country. Undoubtedly, India has produced and continues to produce economists of high calibre who have made valuable contributions to theory and policymaking. However, at present, there are only a limited number of centres of excellence in post-graduate teaching and research in economics in the country. For various reasons, some of which are well known, these centres of excellence have been dwindling in number. It is unfortunately true that today there are very few schools where teaching and research in economics reach up to the best international standards. On the other hand, the services of well-trained, competent economists are in great demand, and the demand is expected to grow exponentially with the rapid growth and globalization of the economy. The aim is to attain standards prevailing in some of the best schools of economics abroad. Merit will be the major consideration in the recruitment of staff and the admission of students subject to certain statutes governing reservations. Enrolment is being done on the basis of national competition since MSE is a national institution, though named after the southern city of its physical location.
It was decided to build up MSE as a largely privately funded institution. The need for private initiatives in higher education was felt because of the resource constraint faced by the government and more importantly because private institutions, duly accredited, would have greater flexibility for innovation and introduction of stricter standards. The hope was that after MSE had become fairly well-established, it could be approved as a deemed university and then it would have both autonomy and the approval of the University Grants Commission.

Government Museum
Egmore | Esst. on:1851
The proposal for a Museum in Madras was mooted by the Madras Literary Society in 1846 AD and Sir Henry Pottinger, the then Governor, obtained the sanction of the Court of Directors of the East India Company in London.
In January 1851 AD, Dr. Edward Balfour, Medical Officer of the Governor's Body guard was appointed as the First Officer in charge of the Government Museum. The notification in the Fort St. George Gazetteer dated 29th April 1851 AD contained the first announcement regarding the opening of the Madras Government Museum. The Government Museum otherwise called as the Central Museum was started in the College of Fort St. George, in the premises of the present Office of the Director of Public Instruction, on College Road. The college had been established in 1812 AD and made a significant contribution to the development of South Indian Languages. The Museum was started in the first floor of the college with the 1100 geological specimens of the Madras Literary Society. It steadily developed and expanded under the guidance and supervision of a succession of Directors. As the building was in a dilapidated condition, the Museum's Superintendent, Dr. Balfour advocated shifting it to another building.
In December 1854 AD, it was shifted to a building named the Pantheon, also known as the Public Rooms or Assembly Rooms, where the elite of the city met.
The building was being utilised for banquets, balls and dramatic performances from the last decade of the 18th Century. The estate of the Pantheon was the property of Hall Plumer, civil servant and public works contractor who subsequently, in 1793 AD, assigned the grounds to a Committee of 24, which regulated the public amusements in the city at that time. In 1821 AD, the Committee sold the main house and central garden space to E.S. Moorat, a wealthy Armenian merchant, who in turn, sold it back to the Government in 1830 AD, for Rs.28,000. The property was originally 43 acres in extent and stretched from Casa Major Road to the present Police Commissioner's Road, and it was flanked by the Pantheon Road and Halls Road.

Madras Diabetes Research Foundation
, Conran Smith Road, Gopalapuram, | Esst. on:1996
Diabetes, a chronic metabolic non communicable disease (NCD), has attained epidemic proportions worldwide. As of 2015, 415 million adults have diabetes, and this number is estimated to increase to 642 million by 2040. More than 95% of all adults with diabetes have type 2 diabetes (T2DM). India is one of the epicentres of the global diabetes epidemic and has the second highest number of people with the disease in the world with 69.2 million individuals as of 2015 and this number is set to increase to 123.5 million by 2040.
The personal, social and economic costs of diabetes are huge and are likely to adversely affect India's economic development over the next couple of decades. Unless urgent steps are taken to thwart this burgeoning epidemic, more and more young and middle-aged Indians will fall prey to diabetes in the prime of their lives.
The first step to combating any epidemic is to gather all available information about it. Till recently, efforts to tackle the diabetes epidemic in India were hamstrung by the lack of quality original data emanating from the country itself. It was also evident to researchers in this field that the data obtained from Western populations could not be directly extrapolated to Indians, since the natural history of diabetes in Indians is quite different from other ethnic groups.
Recognizing the need for a world class research institute to conduct studies on diabetes and its complications in India, Dr. V. Mohan and Dr. M. Rema established the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) in 1996. From its humble beginnings in a small room, MDRF has gone from strength to strength and is now recognized worldwide as a premier research institute for diabetes and its complications.

Fishery Survey of India
Fishing Harbour Complex, Royapuram, | Esst. on:1972
In the year 1946 Government of India established a pilot project known as Deep Sea Fishing Station with the objective of augmenting food supply trough development of deep-sea fishing.
The project graduated to the status of a survey institute in the year 1974 and was named the Exploratory Fisheries Project. The Base Offices of the institute known as Offshore Fishing Stations were located in al the maritime states. Exploratory fishing, charting of fishing grounds, training of fishing operatives and testing commercial possibilities of deep-sea fishing were the programmes assigned to it.
With the declaration of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and consequent changes in priorities in marine fisheries development, there was a growing need for information on resources. In order to address the emerging needs, the Institute underwent a major structural and functional transformation in 1983. It was reorganised and upgraded as a National Institute and rechristened as Fishery Survey of India (FSI).
FSI was reorganised and upgraded as a National Institute and was recognised as a Science & Technology Institute in the year 1988. Consequent to the reorganisation, the Institute has enlarged and upgraded the scope and contents of its functions and activities.
