From the Desk of the Vice Chancellor

Greetings!

As the Vice Chancellor of this premier university, I am extremely pleased to share this space to converse with all of you. The University of Madras is a post- sesquicentennial institution which has forged a glorious path for itself and has been the site for significant scientific discoveries as well as the beacon for national and regional societal transformation. It has successfully managed to hold aloft its tradition even while keeping up with the emerging trends. One reason for this is the way in which the university has kept alive its interactions with all the stakeholders.

The COVID 19 pandemic has introduced a ‘new normal’ and its impact is felt in the workings of the university as well. The students have been attending the lectures online. While online learning has the advantage of being anytime and anywhere, it has taken away the peer group interaction and peer learning which are integral aspects of the university experience. We look forward to welcoming you to the campus very soon. Meanwhile, our faculty and administration will continue to bring the best to the virtual classrooms. As students, you need to view the restrictions posed by the pandemic as a temporary deterrent. Your focus should be to gain the competencies to conduct application oriented research in order to evolve as useful citizens of our society.

Our university boasts of faculty with a high degree of knowledge and commitment to offer the best in teaching and research. Given the context of the pandemic, we need to redefine our teaching-learning processes to offer the best pedagogic experience to our students. Similarly, the post-pandemic era demands that we hone the employment potential and entrepreneurial capacity of our learners. This necessitates that we focus on sponsored research in cutting edge areas.

Our administrative staff have been the backbone of the university. While we move towards a transparent and complete e-governance model, we need more support from you. When the teaching-learning process at our university – from admission to certification -- is moving into the digital era, your skills and competencies need to keep pace.

At our university, we are gearing up for the final round of NAAC re-accreditation. This has offered us an opportunity to assess our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges. Further, it has made us more determined to reiterate our quality benchmarks in teaching, research and extension activities. We are aware of this responsibility and fully prepared for it because, our university has always encouraged individual thinking within the established frameworks. This is echoed in the words of Tim Burners Lee, who initiated the World Wide Web: “We are forming cells within a global brain and we are excited that we might start to think collectively. What becomes of us still hangs crucially on how we think individually.” Let us unite to make the educational experience at the University of Madras a synergy of the best minds and best thoughts.

About Us

F8-Pension Section is one of the key section of the University where many initiatives are being taken to simplify the pension process in order to provide the retirement benefits to pensioners on time without any hurdles. It is located in the Ground floor of Centenary Building for ease access of senior citizens.

The Pension section comprises of one Section Officer, three Assistant Section Officers and one attender to carry on the day to day activities such as:

  • Processing of all pension matters related to University Teaching and Non-Teaching staff.
  • Processing of Family pension matters related to University Teaching and Non-Teaching staff.
  • Processing of all matters related to Monthly Pension, Retirement Gratuity, Commutation, Arrears if any etc..
  • Annual Mustering of Pensioners, regular update of pensioner details.
  • Preparation of Monthly & Annual Estimate and Accounts etc..
  • Maintenance of New Health Insurance Scheme of University Pensioners.
  • Handling of Pensioners Grievances, Vigilance and Audit matters.
  • Maintenance of pensioner (Teaching and Non-Teaching) records such as Scale Register, Pension files etc..

Pension Statutes

“Gratuity-cum-Pension-cum-Provident Fund Scheme for the Office Establishment of the University”

This scheme shall come into effect from the 1 st June 1960, and shall apply to the office establishment of the University recruited to the service on or after 01-06-1960. The employees serving on this date shall have the option of remaining in the old schemes of Pension-cum-Provident Funds or pension-cum-Provident Fund –cum-Insurance, or Pension, or Provident fund or of coming under this scheme.

Provided that these scheme shall not apply to University employees appointed on or after the 1 st April 2003, to services and posts in connection with the affairs of the University which are borne on pensionable establishments, whether temporary or permanent.

This scheme shall apply to full-time employees in superior and Class IV establishment of the University holding a permanent post in a substantive capacity and shall not apply to temporary establishment or work charges establishment or to establishment on specified contracts.

The Pensioner (Both Teaching and Non-Teaching) can avail the festival advance of Rs. 5000/- once in a year for Ramzan/Deepavali/Christmas/Pongal festivals and the same will be recovered in 10 equal instalments from their monthly Pension.

Life Certificate Forms for Pensioners / Family Pensioners has to be submitted every year in the month in which they have retired and the month following the month of retirement will be allowed as grace period for final submission.

Digitization

Provisions are made to pensioners for taking Annual Pension Statement ONLINE using the login credentials provided by the University.

For example:

For User ID: The allotted Pension number should be entered without space. For example if the Pension Number is N0963 it should be entered as N 0 (Zero) 963.

For Password: the Date of Birth should be entered in DD-MM-YYYY For example 23-03-1942.

Health Insurance

NEW HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME FOR UNIVERSITY PENSIONERS/ FAMILY PENSIONERS

The New Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is applicable for University Pensioner and Family pensioners of both Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff.

Pensioners New Health Insurance Scheme has been implemented through United India Insurance Company Ltd. to provide health care assistance to the Pensioners (including spouse)/Family Pensioners on a CASHLESS basis with a provision to avail medical assistance up to Rupees Four lakh for a block period of four years (2018-2022) for which a monthly subscription of Rs.350/-is being recovered from the Pension of the Pensioners/Family Pensioners.
