About the Department
Objective
The Department of Indian Music which was started on May 19th, 1932, celebrated its Platinum Jubilee during 2006-2007.
Mission
-
To strive for excellence in artistic, academic and research pursuits.

To Create the requisite substratum for the study of Fine and Performing Arts to one and all.
-
To nurture and develop creative, analytical and performing skills in the three aspects of 'Sangita' - Gita (voice) Vadya (instrumental and percussion) and Nritya (dance).
Recent Expansion / Advances
The Department has expanded PG Courses to Bharatanatyam and Rhythmology, in addition to Carnatic Music. Till date the Department has produced about 50 PhD Dissertations and 100 M.Phil Dissertations.
Under the UICIC Programme six month certificate courses are offered in Carnatic Music, Hindustani Music, Western Music, Harikatha and Bhajan.
The English Department, having introduced a core course on Australian Studies succeeded in making the Australian Government sponsor an academic every year from 2000 to teach the course through the Australia-India Council.
M.A Natya was instituted in M.G.R. Janaki College of Arts and Science - 2005 as a five year integrated course. B Music was introduced in Tamil Isai Sangam - 2007-2008.
Three months certificate course in Voice Conservation and Care under UICIC in collaboration with Sri Ramachandra University - 2008.
Achievements and International Associations
Alumni are into teaching, Research, Performance and Media. Annual International Music Festivals are organized from December 2007.
In 2007-2008 MOUs have been signed with SIFAS Singapore, New Zealand Carnatic Music Society and The Academy of Fine Arts, London.
e-Journal
Smrti is a Peer Reviewed e-Journal on Fine & Performing Arts. It is a Bi-Annual e-Journal published by the Department of Indian Music, School of Fine & Performing Arts, University of Madras, Chennai with a sole intention of promoting research on Fine & Performing Arts.

3. Ezisai-Mani title Examination of Bharatidasan University
4. Sangitavisarada Examination of S.V.University, Tirupati

11. Vocalists or performers of melodic instruments, of classical music, auditioned by
the All India Radio and placed under "B" Grade or under Grades Higher than that
