From the Desk of the Vice Chancellor

Greetings!

As the Vice Chancellor of this premier university, I am extremely pleased to share this space to converse with all of you. The University of Madras is a post- sesquicentennial institution which has forged a glorious path for itself and has been the site for significant scientific discoveries as well as the beacon for national and regional societal transformation. It has successfully managed to hold aloft its tradition even while keeping up with the emerging trends. One reason for this is the way in which the university has kept alive its interactions with all the stakeholders.

The COVID 19 pandemic has introduced a ‘new normal’ and its impact is felt in the workings of the university as well. The students have been attending the lectures online. While online learning has the advantage of being anytime and anywhere, it has taken away the peer group interaction and peer learning which are integral aspects of the university experience. We look forward to welcoming you to the campus very soon. Meanwhile, our faculty and administration will continue to bring the best to the virtual classrooms. As students, you need to view the restrictions posed by the pandemic as a temporary deterrent. Your focus should be to gain the competencies to conduct application oriented research in order to evolve as useful citizens of our society.

Our university boasts of faculty with a high degree of knowledge and commitment to offer the best in teaching and research. Given the context of the pandemic, we need to redefine our teaching-learning processes to offer the best pedagogic experience to our students. Similarly, the post-pandemic era demands that we hone the employment potential and entrepreneurial capacity of our learners. This necessitates that we focus on sponsored research in cutting edge areas.

Our administrative staff have been the backbone of the university. While we move towards a transparent and complete e-governance model, we need more support from you. When the teaching-learning process at our university – from admission to certification -- is moving into the digital era, your skills and competencies need to keep pace.

At our university, we are gearing up for the final round of NAAC re-accreditation. This has offered us an opportunity to assess our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges. Further, it has made us more determined to reiterate our quality benchmarks in teaching, research and extension activities. We are aware of this responsibility and fully prepared for it because, our university has always encouraged individual thinking within the established frameworks. This is echoed in the words of Tim Burners Lee, who initiated the World Wide Web: “We are forming cells within a global brain and we are excited that we might start to think collectively. What becomes of us still hangs crucially on how we think individually.” Let us unite to make the educational experience at the University of Madras a synergy of the best minds and best thoughts.

     Probing Early Universe Cosmology with Data     The standard model of cosmology along with presence of an epoch of accelerated expansion right after the big bang (coined as `cosmological inflation') can explain the history of our universe very well. The inclusion of the epoch of cosmic inflation solves some of the unavoidable initial condition problems in the big bang theory. There are many competing models to describe this epoch and it is an exciting time to live as a cosmologists as we can falsify and discriminate this models from observation. The Planck satellite has provided the highest resolution yet available in the determination of the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Analysis of this power spectrum provides powerful constraints on the physics of the very early universe. In near future programs like COrE or the CMB-Bharat (if sanctioned) will help to measure and make precise predictions regarding the theory of inflation. Studies on the solutions of Dual Integral Equations occurring in diffraction problems The two-slit experiment demonstrates that a quantum wave function is a probability amplitude that can interfere with itself, producing places where the probability of finding a quantum particle is actually zero and thus the famous "collapse" of the wave function, which show an inherent probabilistic element in quantum mechanics that is irreducibly ontological. The two-slit experiment with just one photon or electron at a time is of great important to study. Revisiting the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox and Bell’s inequality in this context for a more deterministic picture of an "objective reality"  should be the aim of the present work. For this we consider the problem of interference from a double slit and the mathematical formulation is done by solving a pair of  dual integrals Studies on  "Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel, And the Apocalypse of St. John" by Sir Isaac Newton "for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end." - Daniel 12:9 Newton believed God's omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence in creating earth, heavens and all living creatures and and considered bible as inspired Word of God. Jewish National University Library’s collection of Newton’s manuscripts revealed his calculations for the year of the apocalypse, and guessed it should be precisely 1,260 years following the Roman Empire’s founding thus around the year 2060. Newton uses the Books of Daniel  and Revelation for calculations about the apocalypse’s date. In the present age, Newton’s manuscripts with biblical eschatology should be considered for serious-minded scholarly investigation. Studies on  Lead-Free Halide Double Perovskites using First-Principles calculations for Solar Cell applications Solar cells based on organolead halide perovskites have seen rapid progress, and is found to be one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies, owing to their solution-processability, low-cost and high efficiencies in the past few years. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of Organic-inorganic halide perovskites solar cells has reached 22.7%. Significant properties of Perovskites(ABX3 ) like ferroelectricity, photoluminescence, superconductivity, topological insulators are observed in sensors, solar-cell absorbers, fuel cells (catalytic electrodes) and in optoelectronics. As efficiency of photo-voltaic cell is influenced by the absorber band gap. we study the electronic properties of lead free perovskites Cs2 AgBiX6(X = Cl, Br, I), using Quantum Espresso suite. Numerical Magnetohydrodynamics in Astrophysics Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is the simplest but sufficient approximation to describe many large-scale low-frequency phenomena in astrophysical plasma: regular and turbulent dynamo, plasma motions driven by strong magnetic fields, accretion disks, and relativistic jets. Astrophysical jets are physical conduits along which mass, momentum, energy and magnetic flux are channeled from stellar, galactic and extragalactic objects to the outer medium. These jets are narrow  conical or cylindrical/ semi -cylindrical protrusions. Jets are an ubiquitous phenomenon in the universe. They span a large range of luminosity and degree of collimation, from the most powerful examples observed to emerge from the nuclei of active galaxies (or AGNs) to the jets associated to low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) within our own Galaxy.

      Astrophysical jets outflows are observed to emerge from a wide variety of astrophysical objects. They are seen in young stellar objects (YSOs), proto-planetary nebulae, compact objects (like galactic black holes or microquasars, and X-ray binary stars), and in the nuclei of active galaxies (AGNs).
