The University of Madras was established in the year 1857 along with Mumbai and Calcutta Universities. Having served the cause of higher education and research for the past 154 years, the sesquicentennial (150 years) of the University was celebrated in the year 2008 with former President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam as the Chief Guest. In the year 2000, the University of Madras was accredited for the first time by the NAAC and was awarded with “5 Star Status”. Subsequently in 2007 the UoM was re-accredited by the NAAC and awarded “A grade”. Besides, the University of Madras enjoys the special status of “University with Potential for Excellence” with special assistance from the UGC. Having given birth to so many newer Universities not only in Tamil Nadu but also in the neighboring states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the UoM is being considered as the “Mother University” of the Southern part of this country. According to a recent survey, among the 504 Universities in India, the University of Madras is in the 5th position in terms of research publication and other academic achievements.
The University of Madras is marching forward in the continuous process of “enhancing its excellence” since 1857 .
