School of Fine and Performance Arts
The School of Fine and Performing, at present, consists of only one Department, namely, the Department of Indian Music. The Department of Indian Music was set up on May 19, 1932 with the object of imparting instruction in a course leading to a Diploma in Indian Music. Thiru (Tiger) K.Varadachariyar was the first Lecturer and Head. In August 1937, the Department was recognized to enable it to do research in Indian Music.
Currently the Department has 5000 books and 900 published Audio Cassette tapes covering South Indian ,North Indian and other systems of World Music.Also books on Dance, Drama, Culture and History are available .Over 1500 prominent Indian and Foreign Journals facilitate serious research work. The department also photocopiesand microfilms of Manuscripts.
