Department of Statistics

About the Department

The Department of Statistics, was formed initially on creating, a post of Lecturer in 1941. The Department was offering supportive programs in Statistics for other Departments and a Diploma courses in Statistics in the early years. The Department also had a research program with 2 scholars being awarded Ph.D. in Statistics. However, the Department was involved in PG teaching since 1958, teaching statistics to M.Sc. Statistics and Inter collegiate University co-operation scheme. The Department of Statistics has evolved into a full-fledged department in teaching and research in Statistics under the able guidance of Prof.K.N.Venkataraman in 1975. The Department has built up a research network through organized efforts of successive HOD's Prof. K.N.Ponnuswamy, Prof. K.Suresh Chandra. The Department has been engaged in research in the following areas. Time Series Analysis, Design and Analysis of Experiments, Reliability and Survival Analaysis and Bio-Statistics. The Department has so far produced a sizeable number of research papers in leading national and international journals. The Department has an outstanding record by way of 50 Ph.D's, and 100 M.Phil's, besides the regular M.Sc. program. The Department has organized UGC sponsored winter schools/ Refresher courses for the benefit of teachers in Universities / Colleges. The Department has organized several Workshops for the benefits of Research scholars. In 2000, the Department organized an international seminar in honour of Prof. K.N.Ponnuswamy and Prof. K.Suresh Chandra, for their contribution in Design of Experiments and Time Series Analysis respectively. It is heartening to note that students graduated from the Department, have occupied coveted position in Universities (India and Abroad) Government, Corporals, Research Institutions and Public sector undertaking. The Department introduced PG Diploma course in Actuarial Science under self-supportive program in 2000, realizing the need for the course. The program was upgraded in to a Master degree program in Actuarial Science with the generous support from UGC under its 'Innovative program - Teaching and Research in inter disciplinary and emerging areas'. The department has been identified by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under its FIST program for the financial support. Currently the Department enjoys recognition from National and international Institutions, through generous grants and awards it has been receiving in the recent years.Recently the Department has been successful in getting placements for its students in Public undertakings such as e Birla Sunlife, Royal Sundaram, Deloite etc. The faculty members had the opportunity of visiting Universities in USA, Canada, UK, Africa in various capacities. It is a rare honour that Prof.C.R.Rao served as an adjunct faculty Scientists from various institutions in India and abroad have delivered lectures on topics of interest, periodically Innovative program - Teaching and Research in inter disciplinary and emerging areas,
