| The Department was
formed as a separate Department in 1964, before which
time it was part of Physics Dept., Madras University
The Deparment has had the honor of receiving the
Nobel Laurettes Prof S Chandrashekhar, Prof Hans
A Bethe and Prof Norman Ramsey.
Prof P M Mathews, former Head of the Department,
is a recipient of the Hari Om Ashram Award. He is
also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy.
Prof M S Sriram was awarded the UGC Visiting Associateship
during 1994 - 1996. He is also a member of the Research
Advisory Committee for History of Science, INSA,
during 2001 - 2004.
Prof M Laksmanan, who is presently at Bharathi
Dasan University, is a former student of this department.
Dr Lakshmanan is a recipient of the S S Bhatnagar
Award.
